Grammy Awards 2017: The Best Hair and Makeup Looks of the Evening
There is absolutely no doubt that the 59th Annual Grammy Awards had a lot going on from the red carpets, to the obscene performances and major cleavage. But there was no string of disappointments when it came to beauty and style and these celebs came to slay. Here are our top picks from the evening. Let us know some of your favourites on Twitterusing #TradeSecretsCA.
It seems like only Adele can stop in the middle of her George Michael Tribute performance and asked for a do-over on live television! So when Adele asks for a do-over, you give Adele a do-over. It was certainly an eventful evening for Adele, not only did she open up the show with “Hello” and pay tribute to George Michael, but she also won Best Album of the Year for 25 (then to break it in half to share with Bey)! Congratulations for making this year’s Grammy’s a killer year for you. What was a real standout for us however was her hair and makeup. An A+ for her makeup artist, Michael Ashton for giving her that classic glam look. But an A+++ goes to her stylist Chris Appleton who gave us THREE unique looks.
To start off the evening Appleton gives Adele a glamorous look with a modern feel. He created a romantic chignon with some face framing curls. He took a large curling iron to add more volume before pulling it all the way up with just his fingers. He kept the look very natural and pulled pieces with his fingers where needed. He then wrapped her hair into two french twists on the left and right side to give ample amount of volume in the back. While he left some curls to fall out in front and added some texture. Hot Tools 24K Gold 1 1/2″ Curling Iron $105.95
He kept the look loose but put together as the singer took the stage to open up the show with “Hello”. Here he took her hair down and went for a beachy, undone look. He used both a two inch and one inch curling iron and wrapped hair into different directions to create uneven waves and flipped her hair down and roughed it up with a blow dryer. Appleton revealed the trick from going up to down gives the hair more texture and volume. Most people enjoy their hair a couple days old, so the tousled effect gave her the laidback rock and roll vibe. Hot Tools 24K Gold 1″ Curling Iron $91.95
And lastly, once again, pulling Adele’s hair up in a wispy topknot for the George Michael tribute performance with a beautiful textured topknot with two braids up top. Pravana Nevo Lived-In Powder Potion $23.95
Demi Lovato was super confident and sexy on the red carpet with those gorgeous waist length mermaid waves. Yes, mermaid waves are still and probably will forever be a thing no matter how hard people try to stop it from happening. With hairstylist Clyde Haygood, he gives all his ins and outs on how he got her to the perfection it was and transformed her into a sultry bombshell.
The key factor to this look was to be perfectly undone with absolutely no fuss. And Haygood gave that a huge check! Unlike most red carpet glam looks, this look was completely air-dried. So leave your blow dryers at home ladies, you can transform your look straight from your desk at work!
To start apply a golf ball-sized dollop of mousse throughout sections of wet hair from roots to ends. If you need a second go, so be it! Then scrunch, scrunch, scrunch those strands with your hands as they air-dry. Joico Joiwhip Firm Hold Design Foam $21.95
It’s really no surprise that Lady Gaga makes it on our list for one of the topnotch beauty looks we’ve seen on the red carpet. Although her eccentric style of fishnets, leather and major underboob, not to mention her brand new moth tattoo that represents her collaboration with Metallica, which btw, did you SEE the way Gaga jumped into the crowd?!?!? We couldn’t help but go gaga over her glittery eyes and blorange locks. Yes, blorange is the word and it might sound like fetch, but it totally just happened.
First we’ll talk about those eyes. Her go-to makeup artist Sarah Nicole Tanno, who styled Gaga at the Superbowl might we add. She took it another step in the statement direction with those red suede lids and opted for a very dramatic look. Apparently, you can still push the limits of this look as she opted for a fiery winged black liner and blended out towards her temples, then added sparkly jewels that was flashy and metal AF come performance time.
Celebrity stylist Frederic Aspiras introduced us all to Gaga’s new pink locks last weekend with the Matrix Color Sync Watercolors, but now those pastel hues have taken over more than just a subtle charge. Her tousled, voluminous ponytail is what everyone will be talking about!
First Aspiras applied ghd total volume control from root to tip and sectioned the hair and sprayed with ghd heat protectant spray. Once he brushed it through with a paddle brush, he then blow dried with ghd air hairdryer.
Next he went in with hairspray and curled the hair, then waited 5-10 minutes for the curls to cool down and brushed them out. Finally he applied ghd smooth and finish serum and secured her hair in a ponytail.
For the finishing touches, Aspiras went in with the ghd gold professional 1′ styler and created smaller curls then smoothed out the ponytail with some smoothing serum and hairspray and we’re loving every inch of it.
We will be launching ghd’s full range of products later in March at Trade Secrets! So check out a location near you to pick up these goodies to get Lady Gaga’s look from start to finish!
When we saw Paris Jackson hit the red carpet our draws nearly dropped. Not only is the late Michael Jackson’s daughter 18 years old, she’s an old soul, a tomboy but has a keen eye for fashion and knows what looks good on her. She barely wore a stitch of makeup last night but went for a lot, a lot, a lot of mascara. But it was her wild waves that made us oh and ah, as her stylist John D would put it, was a show stopper.
John D created a deep side part for Paris and styled her hair into volumized textured waves by adding a very subtle but super chic tiny braid on the side. This undone look gave Paris a very high-fashion look and an effortless cool girl vibe that we were all over! Curl Keeper Beach Mist $17.50
Finally, on our list was Tinashe who was styled by Marcia Hamilton. Tinashe is known for going down the red carpets with her hair down to kill her performances but last night Marcia wanted to do something a little different. Something bold, something beautiful, something to remember!
Use a flat iron to give the hair an even sleeker look, but be sure to leave out the front pieces to frame the face later. Pin two curls on either side of your head and allow them to set. In the meantime, take a triangular piece of hair from the center of the back of the head and separate two pieces and begin knotting the hair. GS Professional TiTron 1″ Flat Iron $189.95
Continue to pull pieces from hair from the sides of the head and keep knotting until you get to the bottom of the neck. After all the hair has been gathered and knotted, twirl the bottom of the hair and twist it up and secure with a bobby pin.
